wow. I had so much fun with this piece, it's somewhat unbelievable. And I'm kind of sad now that it's over...
I have wanted to do a pokemon girls fan art piece for a really long time, but I wanted to branch out from the cliched picture of them all standing together in order smiling, or taking a picture, or being goofy in some way. So then I started thinking about how important pokemon has been to me, it's been there practically my whole life (my whole sentient life at least), and I was really interested in how the games have changed as I have. (Too cheesy?) I wanted to place a lot of importance, then, on their consoles to really emphasize the differences and changes from each generation. My idea at that point was to create some sort of intangible background that was time themed, and have them in space playing on their own consoles. The problems that came from that, though, were that it would be hard to see the consoles in their hands and the fourth and fifth generation are played on the same console. At least I played them on the same console, and I wanted to use the consoles that I grew up with so that it would be a really personal piece. (I cheated a little though since I played the first two generations on the same console, I used mine - the pokemon one - and my brother's). So then I thought, why would all of them be hanging out together anyway? They live in entirely different worlds! So I imagined that if they were to sort of... look out of their own worlds and see each other they would be very shocked! So then to place more emphasis on my own consoles and that they each have their own worlds, I ended up with this design, with each girl looking out of her screen as if it were a window. I also added the starter I always used from each generation with each girl, because pokemon are just so much fun to draw (and color!) and I wanted to personalize it a bit more.
I don't want to write too much boring commentary right here about my thought process... but! I decided to try taking process photos while I did this piece and ended up going way overboard, so I was thinking about making a tutorial.

TL;DR version: Anyone interested in a tutorial?!
